Inspiration Over Lunch: The Birth of New World Inquiry
New Orleans, 2004. At a Cajun restaurant called Le Palace. A group of friends from diverse backgrounds gathered for lunch. Among them were teachers, administrators, and graduate students, all connected to the academic world and well-acquainted with the pressures of "Publish or perish!" Unsurprisingly, their lively conversation turned to the idea of launching a new independent academic journal. The focus: exploring the influence of France and Spain as colonial powers in the Americas. A name was even proposed—New World Inquiry.
As they enjoyed dishes such as shrimp popcorn, chicken tchoupitoula, crawfish étouffée, and bananas flambées, the group exchanged insights about innovative publishing methods. They discussed computer-based composition, the growing trend of mass text input and production overseas in countries like India and Paraguay, and advancements in digital printing in Mexico. Although the journal remained only a single mockup and never came to fruition, the experience left a lasting impact. Four years later, each participant had ventured into the business side of books and serials production or distribution, carrying forward the ideas and connections formed during that memorable lunch.
